The purpose of this course, with Stephanie Daniels, is to detail compensatory and rehabilitative treatment strategies for post-stroke dysphagia. Particular focus will be placed on implementing the correct rehabilitative strategy based on the underlying impairment. The concept of skill-based versus strength-based training will be discussed, and key compensatory and management strategies will be shown with a live patient.

Stephanie Daniels, PhD, CCC-SLP, F-ASHA

Dr. Daniels received her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. She is a research speech pathologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dr. Daniels is a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Her research, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is focused on neurogenic dysphagia. 1. Overview of Compensation and Rehabilitation Treatments

In the first chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will review background information on management of post-stroke dysphagia, including the distinction between compensation and rehabilitation techniques, and the rationale for each approach.

2. Compensatory Strategies

In the second chapter of this course, Dr. Daniels will take a deeper dive into compensatory strategies shown to be effective for persons experiencing stroke-related dysphagia within the context of the specific signs of dysphagia shown in instrumental assessment.

3. Rehabilitation Strategies

In this chapter, Dr. Daniels takes an in-depth look at rehabilitation strategies that have been shown to be useful for persons experiencing dysphagia after stroke. Specific impairments will be described that target the underlying impairments suggested by instrumental assessment.

4. Patient Case Example: Management

In this chapter, Dr. Daniels puts together concepts from the course, and demonstrates key compensatory and management strategies with a post-stroke patient.

5. Question and Answer

Stephanie interviews Dr. Maggie-Lee Huckabee on key topics regarding management of swallowing problems in patients with suspected stroke.
