Dale Scalise-Smith

PT, DPT, PhD

Dr. Scalise-Smith is the Dean of the College of Health Professions, a professor in the Department of Health Science, and a full professor in the Department of Allied Health at Northern Kentucky University. She collaborates with colleagues to serve children with disabilities using contemporary, evidenced-based practices in the US and internationally. Dr. Scalise-Smith has worked with colleagues from the arts to increase participation of children with and without disabilities. She has authored chapters in early intervention and physical therapy textbooks. She is on the editorial board of an international peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Scalise-Smith is the recipient of a variety of awards, including the Bud DeHaven award for Outstanding Service to the Section on Pediatrics (APTA).

Working together with families, the interprofessional team of therapists and educational professionals can identify community programs that meet the child's desired leisure activities, measure participation in activities and develop advocacy plans for successfully involving their child in community-based activities. This course is designed to introduce instruments that measure participation and explore community-based activities that would positively impact the physical, mental and social well-being of children and adolescents with disabilities.

This course is designed to introduce the ICF-CY framework with a focus on participation in community-based activities. The course will also discuss contextual factors that influence participation, as well as perceived barriers and facilitators to participation. The ICF provides a framework for discussing health and disability for children and youth (CY) with consideration for both the individual and populations with disabilities. This framework will serve as a foundation for future chapters examining instruments that measure participation and evaluating strategies team members use to successfully involve children and youth with disabilities in community-based activities.
