NA: Fall Risk Assessment and Prevention
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), approximately half of the 1.6 million nursing home residents in the United States fall each year. These falls may result in resident injury or death, additional burdens for caregivers, and increased costs. This course will describe the vicious cycle common in many long-term care facilities that leads to more falls, review the most common reasons for falls, teach nursing assistants how they can assess fall risk, and equip nursing assistants with practical approaches they can use to help decrease resident falls in long-term care facilities.
NA: Infection Prevention
Presented by Erin Vigne, RN, MA
NA: Infection Prevention
Nursing assistants play a key role in preventing the spread of infection in long-term care facilities. According to the Centers for Disease Control, infections are a major cause of hospitalization and death, with an estimated 380,000 residents dying of infections in long-term care facilities every year. Many of these infections can be prevented through simple steps, such as proper handwashing, use of personal protection equipment, and the appropriate handling of soiled linens. This course will describe how infection spreads in long-term care facilities, identify critical ways that nursing assistants can prevent the spread of infection, and demonstrate the techniques described.

Topics discussed include lifting and moving residents, falls, exposure to hazardous materials, and workplace violence. The course will also review the rights that employees have to a safe working environment and how to file a complaint with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
