Jennifer Serafin

RN, BSN, MS, GNP-BC, GS-C

Jennifer Serafin graduated from the University of Maryland with a BSN in 1995 and received her MS in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco in June 1999. She has been a certified Gerontologic Nurse Practitioner for almost 20 years. She has experience working with older adults in long-term care/SNF settings and assisted living facilities, as well as in their homes. She currently works for Kaiser Permanente in South San Francisco, California, in the Home-Based Palliative Care program.

Jennifer is an assistant clinical professor for the Department of Physiological Nursing at UCSF. She is active with her state NP association (CANP), where she has served in multiple roles on her local board. She is very active in her local and national chapters of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA). She is the current chair of the GAPNA Foundation Board of Directors, which awards grants for research and clinical projects. She has also served on the GAPNA Certification Task Force, which has created the Gerontological Specialist Certification Exam for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) as of 2018.

The concept of consent will be discussed, including how to know if a resident has the ability to consent. Nursing assistants will learn ways of ensuring resident, staff, and personal safety from inappropriate sexual behavior. This course will also present strategies for how to intervene when residents are exhibiting inappropriate sexual behavior with each other or making inappropriate sexual advances toward nursing assistants.
