TheraBand® Kinesiology Tape: Research and Methods

Presented by Phil Page, PhD, PT, ATC, CSCS, FACSM, LAT

TheraBand® Kinesiology Tape: Research and Methods

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.

The first course in this four-part series on TheraBand Kinesiology Tape focuses on the research and methods of kinesiology taping. Kinesiology taping is a popular clinical intervention, yet there remains controversy about its efficacy. Typically applied to reduce musculoskeletal pain, other claims of efficacy include improvements in strength, range of motion, swelling, and function. Research behind the efficacy of applying specific patterns, directions, and tape tensions remain scarce despite widespread training programs. This course provides a scientifically-based approach to applying kinesiology tape and by recognizing the limitations in the literature. By combining the best available evidence with clinical experience and patient presentation, clinicians will make better clinical decisions when using kinesiology tape.

This is the first course in the four-part TheraBand Kinesiology Tape series. Please be sure watch the following three courses:

TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape: Basic Applications of the Upper Quarter
TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape: Basic Applications of the Lower Quarter
TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape: Clinical Integration

The second course in this four-part series on TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape reviews basic kinesiology tape applications of the upper quarter. Dr. Page begins by discussing the different kinesiology tape cuts and patterns including the I-Cut, Y-Cut, X-Cut, and the Fan Cut. This course presents demonstrations showing applications across the neck, shoulder, upper back, elbow, wrist and hand. Best practices for taping common upper quarter presentations such as poor posture, muscle imbalance, muscle tightness, and swelling are presented.

Dr. Page presents the information with the best available evidence, and by combining this knowledge with clinical experience and patient presentation, clinicians will make better clinical decisions when using kinesiology tape.

The third course in this four-part series on TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape reviews basic kinesiology tape applications of the lower quarter This course presents the application of tape across the low back, core, hip, knee, foot and ankle using live demonstrations. Best practices for taping common lower quarter presentations such low back pain, weakness of muscles, hamstring strain, iliotibial band tightness, quad weakness, foot/ankle pain, ankle sprain, achilles tendon pain, and plantar heel pain are presented.

Dr. Page presents the information with the best available evidence, and by combining this knowledge with clinical experience and patient presentation, clinicians will make better clinical decisions when using kinesiology tape.

The fourth course in this four-part series on TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape focuses on the clinical integration of kinesiology tape. Specifically, Phil Page addresses the clinical decision making process of identifying opportunities to integrate kinesiology taping within practice including best available evidence, clinical experience, and patient-specific considerations.

The four T's of Functional Taping, testing, taping, retesting, and training, are covered. Dr. Page further illustrates how Kinesiology Taping should not be used as a stand-alone treatment, but instead should be combined with therapeutic exercise and proper education on topics such as posture and ergonomics. Clinical scenarios for the integration of kinesiology taping for both upper quarter and lower quarter examples are demonstrated throughout the course.

This is the fourth course in the four-part TheraBand Kinesiology Tape series. Please be sure watch the previous three courses:

TheraBand(R) Kinesiology Tape: Research and Methods
