Stephanie Daniels
PhD, CCC-SLP, F-ASHA
Dr. Daniels received her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. She is a research speech pathologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dr. Daniels is a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders.
Her research, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is focused on neurogenic dysphagia. She teaches graduate courses in dysphagia, and undergraduate courses in anatomy and physiology at the University of Houston. Dr. Daniels also provides clinical education in adult communication disorders.

Management of Post-Stroke Dysphagia
The purpose of this course, with Stephanie Daniels, is to detail compensatory and rehabilitative treatment strategies for post-stroke dysphagia. Particular focus will be placed on implementing the correct rehabilitative strategy based on the underlying impairment. This course, with Dr. Stephanie Daniels, reviews the components of the clinical swallowing examination (CSE), with a particular focus on the cranial nerve assessment. Participants will review how the CSE fits into the overall schema of swallowing evaluation, and the key findings and recommendations that are addressed by the CSE. This information includes steps for collecting background on patient history, knowledge of communication and cognition, and determinants of swallowing function.

The purpose of this course, with Stephanie Daniels, is to review the instrumental swallowing evaluation in patients with stroke. The primary focus will be on the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS); however, the videoendoscopic swallowing study (VEES) will also be reviewed. Protocol and assessment of compensatory strategies will be addressed, and demonstrated through a patient case example.

Screening Swallowing Following Stroke
The purpose of this course, with Dr. Stephanie Daniels, is to facilitate knowledge concerning the importance of swallowing screening in patients admitted with suspected stroke. The goal of swallowing screening will be reviewed, and a distinction made between screening and the clinical swallowing evaluation. Important attributes of a swallowing screening tool will identified, and methods to evaluate the current literature will be described and demonstrated through a patient case example.
