1. What Do You Mean By “Constipation”?
This chapter will review the diagnosis of constipation and discuss its complexity. The Rome IV criteria for diagnosis, and medical investigations will be discussed and explained.
2. Physiology of Digestion and Defecation
In this chapter, the anatomy and physiology of digestion will be reviewed. Learners will gain knowledge about the colorectal, or enteric, nervous system and the reflexes responsible for digestion and defecation. The role of the pelvic floor muscles in defecation will be elucidated.
3. Rehabilitation Interventions for Constipation
Rehabilitation interventions will be explained and demonstrated in this chapter. Treatments will include sEMG perineal biofeedback for pelvic floor muscle function, therapeutic exercise, manual therapies, electrical stimulation, and behavioral strategies.
