1. What is Human Behavior?
Human behavior is complex and includes everything an organism does and feels. How persons behaves is usually related to how they understand and feel about what is happening internally and externally. In this first chapter, Dr. Perron will further describe foundational elements related to human behavior. Associated influences in development of human behavior will also be reviewed.
2. How Does the Brain Influence Human Behavior?
This chapter will provide a brief review of the brain anatomy and foundational concepts regarding the role of the brain in influencing human behavior. Discussion will include how behaviors are either adaptive or maladaptive in response to situations, conditions, and environments. Concepts from behavior theory and functional analysis are introduced.
3. What Do Current Diagnostic Tools Tell Us?
This chapter will provide a brief introduction to various diagnostic imaging technologies used in brain and behavior research. The presenter will provide an overview of how these technologies can provide valuable information about the structure and function of the brain.
4. Engagement Techniques and Approaches
Existing and persistent maladaptive behaviors can be difficult to modify and often impact a client’s ability to participating in therapy sessions and nursing care. This chapter will provide an overview of evidence-based techniques and approaches found to be successful in engaging clients.
5. The Aging Brain
This chapter focuses on changes specific to the aging brain that potentially lead to increased occurrences of maladaptive behaviors. Management techniques to promote positive treatment responses for this population will be reviewed through case examples.
6. The Brain With Disease or Trauma
Clients with changes to their brain due to disease or trauma often present with behavioral problems which often impact recovery or rehabilitation. The chapter will review the common maladaptive behaviors seen with brain injuries and the possible reasons why they occur. Specific management techniques to promote positive treatment responses for this population will be reviewed through case examples.
7. The Brain With Mental Illness
Clients with mental health conditions are at particularly higher risk for physical health conditions and often require the care from a variety of inter-professional team members including nursing and rehab therapists. This chapter with review common mental illnesses and the challenges faced with engaging these clients due to maladaptive behaviors. Specific management techniques to promote positive treatment responses for this population will be reviewed through case examples.
