Dr. Ann W. Kummer retired as senior director of the Division of Speech-Language Pathology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in September 2017. 1. Types and Causes of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate

This chapter will include a discussion of the types of cleft lip and cleft palate, including the extent of each type of cleft. The characteristics of submucous cleft will be discussed. The genetic and environmental causes of clefts will also be explained.

2. Classification of Clefts and Embryological Development of the Lip and Palate

This chapter will cover the basic cleft palate classification of clefts of the lip and palate based on the sequence of embryological development.

3. Pierre Robin Sequence

This chapter will begin with a definition of a sequence in embryological development. The effects of micrognathia on the tongue and palate will be described. Finally, the characteristics and treatment of Pierre Robin sequence will be discussed.
