Dr. DeMarco (formerly Gladson) is the Senior Associate Dean for Education at the Rutgers University School of Health Professions and is currently co-leading the Workforce Development Core for the New Jersey Alliance for Clinical and Translational Science's NIH CTSA for Princeton, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. She also is the the Director of the Biopharma Educational Initiative and has grown the program from certificates in recruitment and regulatory affairs to a MS in Clinical Research Management.
Dr. DeMarco earned a BS from the University of Pennsylvania in Occupational Therapy, a MS from Columbia University in Physical Therapy, and a PhD in Pharmacology from the Rutgers School of Graduate Studies. Her areas of expertise include pharmacology, physiology, and upper extremity rehabilitation.

This course reviews the pathophysiology and drug treatment for Type 1 Diabetes. The synthesis and release of insulin as well as its stimulus for release is discussed. Students will review exogenous insulin treatment and learn how patients match the amount of insulin injected with food intake and activity.

This course summarizes the pathophysiology of cardiac disease with regard to its pharmacologic treatment. Students will learn about nitroglycerin and how to use the patient's response to differentiate angina from an MI. Students will also learn about drugs for high cholesterol and how to distinguish their side effects from true musculoskeletal impairments. The course will also cover drug treatment for congestive heart failure and explain the limitations of antiarrhythmic drugs.

This course, taught by Dr. Barbara Gladson, reviews the major categories of drugs used to treat high blood pressure. Students will learn the mechanism of action, indications, and adverse drug reactions associated with these agents. Physical and Occupational Therapy literature provides limited coverage of medications commonly seen in practice. Additionally, these sources of information provide only superficial coverage of pharmacologic principles and how these relate to therapeutic interventions for our patients. The aim of this series is to present the most common drug categories seen in practice and discuss their interaction with exercise, when applicable. The first course in this series introduces learners to the general principles of pharmacology. Students will also learn how to recognize adverse drug events and to use physical findings to determine toxicity.
